PRACTICAL GUIDE

How to reduce a PDF below 1MB

A 1MB limit is common for applications, government forms, and email attachments. At this size, scan quality can decline quickly, so begin with recommended compression and use stronger compression only when needed.

Before you begin

Check whether the recipient means 1MB per file or for all attachments. Aim slightly below the limit, around 900KB, to reduce upload errors caused by strict validation.

Step-by-step

  1. Select the original in the PDF compressor.
  2. Check whether recommended compression produces a file below 1MB.
  3. If not, try strong compression and inspect small text and images.

Check the result before sharing

Even if the size passes, confirm that important IDs, signatures, and table figures are readable. If quality is not sufficient, consider rescanning the original in grayscale or lower resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Is a file just over 1MB acceptable?

Upload systems often enforce the limit strictly, so making it smaller is safer.

Will compressing repeatedly help?

Repeated compression can increase quality loss. Try different settings from the original file instead.
